Zachary was 9 years old when he received his second heart transplant. He received his first heart transplant when he was 10 months old. Zachary was doing well until he developed post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder (PLTD) when he was 7 years old. As a result of the PLTD, Zachary had to stop taking anti-rejection medications, and his body eventually began to reject his heart. In 2010, Zachary was placed on a ventricular assist device (VAD) until he was able to receive his second heart. Due to the PLTD, Zachary is still unable to take anti-rejection medication. As a result of Zachary’s condition, he is unable to play sports, ride a bike or travel. Instead, Zachary occupies a lot of his time playing video games. Zachary’s dream was for a complete room makeover. With the help of local artists, Jamie’s Dream Team was able to makeover Zachary’s bedroom with painted wall murals of Zachary’s favorite video game and science fiction characters, a custom made rocket bed, and an arcade game. Zachary and his friends now have a super cool place to hang out and play their video games! Despite all that Zachary has endured, he thinks more about others than he does himself. In 2010, Zachary selflessly donated funds that were raised for him by a summer softball league to Jamie’s Dream Team so that other kids could have their dreams fulfilled also. Zachary is truly an amazing and inspirational child!
